María José Cervell Hortal ha publicado varios libros y artículos en diferentes ámbitos del Derecho Internacional Público y del Derecho de la Unión Europea (véanse algunos en https://dialnet.unirioja.es/servlet/autor?codigo=85982). Sus líneas de investigación principales son el uso de la fuerza, el desarme y el control de armamento, el Derecho Internacional Humanitario, el sistema institucional de la Unión Europea y los derechos humanos en la Unión Europea. 
También ha coordinado y/o dirigido la edición de siete libros (sobre crisis humanitarias, yihadismo, terrorismo internacional y Unión Europea). Es autora de la voz "Nuclear Non-proliferation" de Oxford Bibliographies (2013, texto revisado en 2019). Fue miembro del Comité Editorial de la Revista Española de Estudios Internacionales (2013-2017).
Ha participado en seis Proyectos de Investigación financiados por instituciones españolas. Ha sido la segunda Investigadora Principal del Proyecto "Lucha de Civilizaciones (Estado islámico): retos y consecuencias para Naciones Unidas, la Comunidad Internacional y su Derecho. ¿Una "Alianza de Civilizaciones" contra el Estado Islámico?, financiado por el Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad. Actualmente, es la Investigadora Principal del Proyecto "El Derecho Internacional ante los retos tecnológicos: en busca de un marco jurídico realista sobre las nuevas formas de uso de la fuerza", financiado por el Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad.  
Recientemente, ha sido parte del grupo asesor sobre el desarrollo de un nuevo concepto de sistemas contra drones del Centro Español de Estudios sobre la Defensa Nacional

María José Cervell Hortal has published books and articles in various areas of Public International Law and European Law (see https://dialnet.unirioja.es/servlet/autor?codigo=85982)  being her main research fields the use of force, disarmament and control weapons regulations, International Humanitarian Law, European Union institutions and European Union and human rights. She has also directed and/or coordinated the edition of seven books (on humanitarian crisis, yihadism, international terrorism and European Union). She is the author of Oxford Bibliographies on Nuclear Non-Proliferation, 2013 (revised text in 2019). She has been a member of the Editorial Board of the Revista Española de Estudios Internacionales (2013-2017).

She has participated as a member in six Research Projects financed by Spanish institutions. She has been the Principal Researcher of the Project “Clash of Civilizations (Islamic State): challenges for United Nations, the International Community and its rules”, financed by the Spanish Economic Ministry. She is currently the Principal Researcher in the Spanish Economy, Industry and Competitiveness Ministry Project “International Law and technology challenges: searching for a realistic legal framework on the new forms of the use of force”.

She has recently acted as an adviser for the Spanish Center of Studies for National Defence, working on the development on a new concept for Counter Unmanned Aircraft Systems.
