Angel Pérez-Ruzafa was born in Murcia (Spain) in 1958. He obtained a BSc in Biology in the University of Murcia (Spain) and the University of La Laguna (Canary islands-Spain) in 1980 and a PhD degree in 1989 in the University of Murcia on the Ecology of the benthic assemblages of the Mar Menor lagoon. He is currently Professor of Ecology and Head of the research group on Ecology and Management of Coastal Marine Ecosystems at the Department of Ecology and Hydrology in the Faculty of Biology at the University of Murcia. His research is concerned with coastal lagoons ecology, environmental impact, biological indicators, marine protected areas and on the dynamics of populations and ecology of echinoderms and benthic fishes. He has authored or co-authored over 90 Books or book chapters and 204 scientific articles (128 in the WoS core collection), with 8967 citations, h-index=48, i10 index=131 in Google Scholar.

His research has been developed through national and international projects at Galapagos islands, Atlantic archipelagos (Azores, Madeira, Canary islands and Cabo Verde), Antarctic and the Mediterranean. Recently, Professor Angel Pérez-Ruzafa has been the Coordinator of the European Commission Project Empafish (‘European Marine Protected Areas as tools for Fisheries management and conservation’).

He is former Vicechancellor of University Extension and International Relationships of the University of Murcia. He collaborates as scientific assessor and in several environmental management and research projects with European, Spanish and Regional administrations. Currently, he leads the project OOCMUR (Coastal Oceanographic Observatory of Murcia) for the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and the Murcia Regional Government. Since 2016 I act as Spokesman of the Mar Menor Scientific Advisory Committee (Murcia Region, Spain).

Elected member of the Academy of Sciences of the Region of Murcia and Corresponding Academic of the Canary Academy of Sciences.

Since 2019, elected President of the Academy of Sciences of the Murcia Region.
