Embodied Cognitive Science and Scientific Expertise in Reading (ECSSER)

ECSSER is a research project funded by the ‘Saavedra Fajardo’ sub-programme of Fundación Séneca, the Science and Technology Agency of the Region of Murcia, in Spain. The project is hosted by the University of Murcia, and will run from September 2025 to August 2030. Some institutional information is available here.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:
The project ECSSER will develop an empirically-informed philosophical account of the embodied cognitive dynamics of scientific expertise and its effects on reading and the understanding of scientific texts. The overarching objective is twofold: first, to fully characterize scientific expertise as an embodied phenomenon, and second, to identify the behavioral, intellectual, bodily/kinematic and experiential changes that occur over time with the shift from being a novice to becoming an expert. This twofold overarching objective will be accomplished through interdisciplinary, mixed-methods research in three distinct but interconnected lines of work: the first is conceptual, theoretical and methodological (Subproject 1: Work Packages A and B); the second is observational and qualitative (Subproject 2: Work Package C); the third is experimental and quantitative (Subproject 3: Work Packages D and E). By shedding light on the basic cognitive dimensions of scientific expertise, ECSSER will also identify potential directions for addressing the pressing challenges surrounding public understanding of science, science skepticism and the crisis of expert knowledge in contemporary society.
