The Academy of Sciences is an honorific society focussing on promoting and disseminating scientific and technological research as well as their use for the general welfare.

The Members of the Academy are distinguished scholars in scientific and engineering research.

It was signed into being by President Valcárcel on June 15, 2001. As mandated in the regional Academies Law, the Academy has, since then, to report upon any subject of science, mainly regarding Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, and Physics, whenever called upon to do so by any department of the government.

Understanding the growing roles that science and technology would play in public life, the Academy organizes a complete series of activities (conferences, round tables, expositions, reports, memoirs) to update citizen's scientific and technological culture.

As a non-profit organization, the Academy provides a public service by working outside the framework of government to ensure independent advice on matters of science and technology.

The Academy membership is composed of 32 ordinaries, 6 corresponding, and 5 honour members. All of them are elected in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research; election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a scientist or engineer. The Academy is governed by a Council comprised of five members, elected from among the Academy membership. I've been the president since its creation until February 2010 and have been re-elected for the next four years.
