I obtained my PhD in Biology at the University of Murcia, Spain (1999). Then I had a postdoctoral position (2001-2003) at the CBETM (Centre de Biologie et Écologie Tropicale & Méditerranéenne – UMR 5244) of the EPHE-CNRS in Perpignan (France) under the supervision of Dr. René Galzin. I became professor of Ecology at the University of Murcia in 2008. My research focuses on reef fish ecology and conservation, with special emphasis on the ecology of marine protected areas as a tool for fisheries management and biodiversity conservation, and the functional response of communities to human disturbance. More recently, I am also working on the social-ecological interface of management and governance of marine resources, and on the effects of climate change on marine communities and ecosystems. I have participated in numerous research projects at the national, European and international levels.
