Sea Sentinels

In 2017-2018, this research group developed a citizen science initiative at a regional level (at southeastern Spain marine protected areas: Cabo de Palos-Islas Hormigas, Cabo Tiñoso, Cabo de Gata Níjar).

This project, named Centinelas del Mar I, was financed by “Fundación Biodiversidad”, and had “Ministerio para la Transición Ecologica” support (Spanish environment government)..

Main goal of this project was to improve the efficiency in climate change adaptation of fishermen and divers (among others) in marine protected areas and surrounding areas (including Natura 2000 network).

We carried out different activities: courses, seminars and workshops (with divers, fishermen, sailors, etc.) to collect data, we create a methodological guidelines on citizen science, we accomplished educational activities (such as coastal itineraries and narratives) , etc. (More INFO: visit News headland).

In the following link you can download a Methodological Guide (in Spanish) to recognize and carry out observations on the effects of climate change on the marine environment, in addition you can find proposals for minimizing the impacts of various professional and rcreational sectors to deal with climate change:

You have also above a summary of  scientific protocols for monitoring the climate change indicators used in this project (in Spanish), which you can take with you in your marine adventures:

Finally, if you need simpler  protocols, the following sheet (in Spanish) will guide you on the global effects of climate change on the marine environment, and can also serve as a guide in your marine incursions:

Your observations are crucial for adaptation to climate change!

Furthermore!!

Currently, Centinelas del Mar II arises as a continuity of the Centinelas del Mar I project. This project aims  to monitor changes in marine biodiversity (directly or indirectly linked to climate change). Such monitoring uses  citizen science as a main tool. Also, in this project we propuse economic diversification measures to sea sectors. Such measures can be included in Management Plans of  study areas.

As new actions, this proyect include: new synthetic informative material in order to monitor changes in marine biodiversity,  or Sentinels I areas most common species, an official market research proposals on the possibility of expanding nature content in diving centers recreational offers.
