JUAN MANUEL HERNÁNDEZ-CAMPOY is Full Professor in Sociolinguistics in the Department of English Philology at the University of Murcia, Spain, where he teaches on English Sociolinguistics, Varieties of English and the History of the English Language, as well as on research methods in sociolinguistics and socio-historical linguistics for postgraduate students. He served as Editor of Cuadernos de Filología Inglesa (1999-2001) and the General Editor of the International Journal of English Studies (IJES) (2001-2005). Since 1996 he has been coordinator of Curso de Lengua Extranjera, Sociedad y Cultura (LESC), and, since 1999, co-director of Curso de Variación Sociolingüística (VaSo), seminars run at the University of Murcia. He was Director of the Sociolinguistics Panel for the Asociación Española de Lingüística Aplicada (AESLA) from 2000 to 2005, and of the Sociolinguistics and Dialectology Panel for the Asociación Española de Estudios Anglo-Norteamericanos (AEDEAN) from 2005 to 2009; and Head of the Department of English Philology at the University of Murcia (2005-2008). He also served as Treasurer for the Asociación Española de Lingüística Aplicada (AESLA: 2010-2016).
He has been a member of the Editorial Board of Atlantis and Revista de Etnolingüística, Geolingüística y Sociolingüistica, and currently is of Revista Electrónica de Lingüística Aplicada. He is also currently in charge of different European Union Erasmus and Socrates Liaison Programs with the Universities of Essex in England and Bern in Switzerland, though until 2003 he used to be leading similar programs with other twelve European University Institutions such as Staffordshire, Dublin, Roehampton, Surrey, Birmingham, Limerick, Berlin, Rostock, Kiel, Trier, Adam Mickiewicz, Chester, Lyon or Nanterre.
He has also been Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Essex (1997-1998), Research Scholar at Georgetown University (2007) and Indiana University (2017), as well as visiting scholar at the Universities of La Laguna, Málaga, Alicante, Valencia, Seville, Jaén, La Rioja, Granada and Vitoria (UPV) in Spain, Roehampton, Essex, Bristol and Chester in England, Cyprus, Adam Mickiewicz in Poland, Ohio in the United States, Bern in Switzerland and Munich in Germany. He was leading researcher (IP) of the projects on Sociolinguistics and Styles (HUM2006-0588/FILO) and Sociolinguistic Models of Stylistic Variation in English Historical Correspondence Corpora ((HiStylVar Project: FFI2014-56084-P), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education, and on Speaker Design as a Model of Stylistic Variation (02914/PHCS/05), funded by Fundación Séneca (2006-2008); and research member in projects such as PI-36/00797/FS/01 (Estudio de un programa de intervención pedagógica para la enseñanza de la pronunciación del inglés como Lengua Extranjera en 4º nivel de la ESO y en 2º de Bachillerato.
