A THANK-YOU NOTE:

The present material was designed as an introduction to academic and scientific writing. The seminar seeked to help would-be scientists and current ones engaged in research publishing, to write in a clear, crisp and correct manner. It mainly addressed the requirements for English academic writing from a cultural perspective, since the present conventions or writing constructs of the scientific world today are very much influenced by the Anglo-Saxon tradition of empirical thought. As a secondary, but not less important objective, the material it contains aimed at creating an awareness of the fabric of language for scientists who wish to disseminate their findings. Finally, it attempted for students to engage in activities that require thought and creativity, so as to, ultimately, refine and improve their academic writing and judgment.

The author wishes to thank the institution for this chance to interact with its Graduate Students during her stay as a Visiting Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology. The interaction with such bright young minds proved to be a fascinating, unforgettable experience. In particular, the author wishes to thank the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, and, more specifically, Professor Krishna Pagilla for his unfailing cooperation, warm hospitality and enlightening example.
